Enemalta brings electricity back step by step

Enemalta is working to bring electricity back. A big power cut happened on Thursday morning. It started at around 08.00. Some areas have electricity again. Work continues in the other areas.

Enemalta says a safety system started automatically. The system protects Malta's electricity network. When it has to, it lowers the demand for electricity. This stops bigger problems and serious damage. Malta now uses only local power. The link to Sicily, called IC1, is closed for now. The reason is work on IC2 in Sicily.

After the system started, Enemalta used more reserve power stations. It will bring the supply back step by step. Technical teams are watching the network closely. Enemalta has not said when all the power will return. This June, the cable for the second link was finished in Charleston, USA.

Enemalta is restoring electricity step by step after a widespread power cut

Enemalta is working to restore electricity after a widespread power cut on Thursday morning. The power cuts began at around 08.00, according to reports. In a statement on social media, Enemalta said that electricity has returned to some areas. Work is continuing to reconnect the other affected areas.

The company explained that the power cut happened because an automatic protection system started working. This system was designed to protect Malta's electricity network. When it is necessary, the system automatically reduces electricity demand, so it can prevent bigger problems and protect the infrastructure from serious damage.

Enemalta said that Malta is now using only local production. The Malta-Sicily Interconnector (IC1) has been closed for the moment because of ongoing work on the second interconnector (IC2) in Sicily. After the protection system started, Enemalta immediately brought in extra reserve power plants to increase capacity and restore the supply step by step. Technical teams are watching the network closely to keep it stable while electricity returns to the remaining areas. However, the company has not said when the supply will be fully restored.

In June this year, the production of the second high-voltage Malta-Sicily cable was completed at the Nexans facility in Charleston in the USA. The 300 million euro investment has been approved for ERDF funding under the priority of "promoting a clean and fair energy transition". It directly supports smart and stable energy systems. The project was recognised as a "Strategic Operation" in the 2021-2027 Programme, and 261 million euros of European funding was allocated.

Enemalta restores power step by step after widespread outage

Enemalta is working to restore electricity to the areas affected by the widespread power cut that hit on Thursday morning. The outages were reported to have begun at around 08.00.

In a statement published on social media, Enemalta confirmed that power had been returned to some localities. Work is continuing to reconnect the remaining affected areas. The company explained that the outage happened when an automatic protection system, designed to protect Malta's electricity grid, was activated. When necessary, the system automatically reduces electricity demand in order to prevent wider disruption and protect the infrastructure from serious damage.

Enemalta said that Malta is currently powered entirely by local generation. The Malta–Sicily Interconnector (IC1) has been temporarily shut down because of ongoing work on the second interconnector (IC2) in Sicily. After the protection system was triggered, Enemalta immediately brought additional back-up power stations into operation to increase capacity and restore supply gradually.

The company added that its technical teams are monitoring the network closely to keep the grid stable while power is being returned to the remaining affected areas. It has not yet said when electricity supply will be fully restored.

In June of this year, production of the second high-voltage Malta–Sicily interconnector cable was completed at the Nexans facility in Charleston, in the United States. The €300 million investment has been approved for ERDF funding under the priority of "promoting a clean and fair energy transition". It contributes directly to smart and stable energy systems. The project was recognised as a "Strategically Important Operation" in the 2021-2027 Programme, and €261 million of European funding has been allocated to it.

Enemalta restores power in stages after widespread blackout

Enemalta is working to restore electricity to the areas affected by the widespread power cut that struck on Thursday morning. The outages are reported to have begun at around 08:00.

In a statement published on social media, Enemalta confirmed that power had been reinstated in a number of localities, while work continues to reconnect the remaining affected areas. The company explained that the blackout was triggered when an automatic protection system, designed to safeguard Malta's electricity grid, kicked in. Whenever necessary, the system automatically reduces electricity demand in order to prevent more extensive disruption and to shield the infrastructure from serious damage.

Enemalta also noted that Malta is currently being supplied entirely by domestic generation. The Malta–Sicily Interconnector (IC1) has been temporarily shut down owing to ongoing work on the second interconnector (IC2) in Sicily. Once the protection system had been activated, Enemalta immediately brought additional reserve power plants online with a view to boosting capacity and restoring supply gradually.

According to the company, its technical teams are continuing to monitor the network closely so as to maintain grid stability while electricity is returned to the remaining affected areas. Nevertheless, Enemalta has yet to provide any information on when supply will be fully restored.

In June of this year, production of the second high-voltage Malta–Sicily interconnector cable was completed at the Nexans facility in Charleston in the United States. The €300 million investment has been approved for ERDF funding under the priority of "promoting a clean and just energy transition", and it contributes directly to smart, stable energy systems. The project has been recognised as an "Operation of Strategic Importance" under the 2021-2027 Programme, and €261 million of European funding has been allocated to it.

Enemalta restores power in stages after widespread blackout

Enemalta is working to bring electricity back to the localities hit by Thursday morning's widespread outage, which was reported to have begun at around 08:00. In a statement published on social media, the company confirmed that power has been restored in a number of localities, while work to reconnect the remaining affected areas is still under way. What has yet to be announced is the date by which supply will be fully restored.

The company explained that the outage was triggered when an automatic protection system, designed to safeguard Malta's electricity grid, kicked in. Where necessary, that system cuts electricity demand automatically, the aim being to head off wider disruption and to spare the infrastructure serious damage. In other words, the outage originated in a mechanism whose very purpose is to contain disruption and protect the network's infrastructure. Enemalta stressed that this protective function operates automatically.

Enemalta noted that Malta is currently running entirely on local generation, because the Malta-Sicily Interconnector (IC1) has been temporarily shut down owing to ongoing work on the second interconnector (IC2) in Sicily. Once the protection system had been activated, the company wasted no time in bringing additional reserve power plants online, with a view to raising capacity and restoring supply in stages. Restoration, then, is being carried out step by step rather than all at once.

Enemalta's technical teams, it said, are keeping a close watch on the network so as to preserve grid stability while electricity is returned to the remaining affected areas. Not only is the network being watched closely, but additional reserve capacity has also been brought into play. Until the company says more, the timing of a complete return to normal supply remains an open question.

Separately, in June this year, production of the second high-voltage Malta-Sicily interconnector cable was completed at the Nexans facility in Charleston in the United States. The €300 million investment has been approved for ERDF funding under the priority of 'fostering a clean and just energy transition' and contributes directly to smart, stable energy systems. Having been recognised as a 'Strategic Operation' in the 2021-2027 Programme, the project has had €261 million in European funding allocated to it.
